Study Abroad: Watch for Feeless education

While there are a number of national and international scholarships for Nepali students, most students miss out on them due to lack of information. Scholarship programs are usually funded by a foreign organization or the country office of respective universities or countries offering these privileges.

“It is necessary that students get familiar with different opportunities of scholarships such as those offered by foundations; they can choose a few relevant ones and then apply accordingly,” says Dr Nischal N Pandey, Chairperson of South Asia Foundation (SAF) emphasizing on the need for Nepali students to be active in order to utilize these opportunities.

Most of the information is readily available through popular social media and it is up to students to search the web and keep themselves informed about these innumerable avenues for their study abroad programs. Some of the scholarship programs that students can currently apply for are:

» Sydney Achievers International Scholarships from the University of Sydney which includes AUD$10,000 each per year available for the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) with registered period of the recipients’ undergraduate or postgraduate program of study. Japan Scholarship Program from Asian Development Bank which covers full tuition fees, monthly subsistence and housing allowance, allowance for books and educational materials; medical insurance and travel expenses. The program caters to post-graduate degrees in Economics, Management, Health, Education, Agriculture, Environment, Natural Resource Management and Science and Technology. One-World-Scholarship from the Austrian Cooperation for Education at Austrian universities for Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees which comprises special study expenses, study-accompanying measures and tutoring, study accompanying training apart from the monthly allowance of amounts between Euro 500 and 550. For details, visit the website www.aai-graz.at International Graduate Scholarships from Loughborough University, the UK, for a duration of one year which covers 25% of the student’s program tuition fee. For details, visit the website www.lboro.ac.uk.

Fulbright Scholarship Program and Fellowship from the United States Department of State which provides scholarships for two years’ Master’s Degree in the US under the Student Scholarship Program. Approximately six applicants are selected for the scholarship program annually.

Similarly, Fulbright Senior Scholar/Artist Program provides grants for up to four scholars for conducting a post-doctoral research at a university in the US for a period of six months.

The Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship Program funds professionals for one academic year of graduate studies and practical and professional experiences in the field of Agriculture, Journalism, Substance Abuse Education, Educational Administration, Human Resource Management, Law and Human Rights, Teaching of English as a Foreign Language, Urban and Regional Planning, among others.

Chevening Scholarship provided by the UK Government and Cambridge Overseas Trust was previously administered by the British Council and supports Nepali graduates for a Master’s Degree in any British university. The Chevening Scholarships Secretariat now looks after the application and selection process for the scholarship program. For details, go to www.chevening.org/nepal.

Apart from the above, there are other scholarship programs provided by the Japan Foundation, South Asia Foundation (SAF), SAARC Secretariat based in Kathmandu, Indian Embassy and German political organization Konrad Adenauer Stiftung; and the details about the application process and criteria are readily available on their websites.
